Once Esau found out that Jacob had received his blessing from Isaac, he wasn’t happy. He wept and pleaded with Isaac to bless him as well. Isaac only had one blessing, and it had been given to Jacob.
Esau felt like Jacob had really cheated him out of his blessing and birth right. Esau willingly gave up his birthright. However, Jacob was pretty deceitful to get Isaac’s blessing for the inheritance. I could see where Esau would be mad about this whole situation.
Esau is so mad at Jacob that he plans to kill him.
Rebekah and Isaac find out about Esau’s plans. They send Jacob away to hide at Rebekah’s brother, Laban’s, house. Isaac and Rebekah tell Jacob to also find a wife while he was there. Before Jacob left, Isaac gave him another blessing.
Isaac said, “May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!” Genesis 27:4
Isaac has already blessed Jacob once when he thought he was Esau. Now he is asking God to give this blessing of Abraham to Jacob and his offspring.
On his way to Laban’s house, Jacob has a dream. In this dream, God confirms to Jacob that He will use him to carry out his covenant.
“In you and your offspring, shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Genesis 28:14
Its settled then. Jacob is officially the brother that God will use to continue carrying out this family’s special family line through His covenant.
Jacob arrives at Laban’s house and ends up marrying both of his daughters, and having twelve children. Ever heard of the twelve tribes of Israel? We will talk more about all of that tomorrow.
Does anyone know which tribe Jesus’s family came from?
